Play Submission Policy
Next is a professional not-for-profit theatre company currently in our 31st season. We are committed to developing and staging new plays and introducing emerging playwrights to Chicagoland. Over the past 30 years we have commissioned new plays, produced world and area premieres and worked on projects with many renowned playwrights including Tracy Letts, Paula Vogel, Carson Kreitzer, Sarah Ruhl, Suzan-Lori Parks and Kyle Jarrow. Writers are urged to refer to our production history for the types of plays we produce.
Our ideal script experiments with form and function, tells its story in an innovative way and/or pushes the boundaries of traditional narrative. It must align with our core mission: to produce socially provocative, artistically adventurous new work. Plays considered can be of any length, style or genre but must make a substantial contribution to our ongoing dialogue with our audience. Plays need not be large or small in terms of cast size or setting, but should be expansive in their theatrical vision of the world.
Next does not accept unsolicited scripts for consideration. Any writer with representation should submit his or her play through a literary agent. Submissions will also be accepted if accompanied by a letter of recommendation by a theater professional (i.e., an artistic director or literary manager at a professional theater). For unsolicited scripts, please send a letter of inquiry, a brief (150 - 300 words) synopsis of the play and 10 pages of dialogue. Please note that Next does not provide any comments or suggestions about work that we neither intend to develop nor produce.
